List of listed buildings and structures in Crawley
There are 94 listed buildings and structures in the English borough of Crawley, West Sussex. The Borough of Crawley is based on the town of the same name, located approximately halfway between London and Brighton. Although it expanded substantially after World War II when it was designated a New Town by an Act of Parliament,[1] many older buildings remain, especially outside the town centre.
In England, a building or structure is defined as "listed" when it is placed on a statutory register of buildings of "special architectural or historic interest" by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, a Government department, in accordance with the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.[2] English Heritage, a non-departmental public body, acts as an agency of this department to administer the process and advise the department on relevant issues.[3] There are three grades of listing status: Grade I, defined as being of "exceptional interest"; Grade II*, "particularly important buildings of more than special interest"; and Grade II, used for buildings of "special interest".[4]
Crawley has three buildings of Grade I status, 12 listed at Grade II* and 79 of Grade II status. The three Grade I buildings are all places of worship, and churches and farmhouses feature frequently in the list. Other structures given recognition by English Heritage include a signal box, a watermill, and the Beehive[5]—a "revolutionary"[6] purpose-built circular building which was the original passenger terminal at Gatwick Airport and the world's first fully integrated airport terminal.[7][8]
The design of the New Town was based on a series of self-contained residential neighbourhoods around a town centre with commercial and civic buildings. There are now 13 neighbourhoods in the town.[9] Pound Hill and Ifield, both of which were old villages absorbed by the postwar development, have 24 listed buildings each. Northgate, which has 17, includes much of the town centre and the old High Street. Langley Green, in which there are 15 listed buildings, is the largest neighbourhood with a large semi-rural hinterland. Elsewhere, there are five listed buildings in West Green, two each in Bewbush and Southgate, and one in each of Broadfield, Gossops Green, Maidenbower, Three Bridges and Tilgate. Furnace Green is the only neighbourhood with no listed buildings.[5]

St Nicholas' Church, Worth is of Saxon origin, and was probably built in the 10th century. Worth was originally a Wealden village with its own parish, but boundary changes caused by the expansion of Crawley brought the church and part of the parish within the Borough of Crawley.[10] It is unusually tall and large for a Saxon church—especially as the area was thinly populated at the time. Some structural changes were made in the 13th century,[11] and restoration work was undertaken in 1871: structural improvements were made and a bell-tower was added, but some of the changes to the Saxon features were controversial.[12] A fire in 1986 caused severe damage to the roof, but it was successfully restored.[13] The church is now at the centre of the modern parish of Worth, Pound Hill and Maidenbower, serving the northeast of Crawley.[14]
St Margaret's Church, Ifield, was another ancient church at the centre of a large parish with a scattered population. The village of Ifield was merely a hamlet around the church.[15] Its oldest surviving part is one end of the chancel, which is 13th-century.[16] The building also experienced renovations and reordering in the Victorian era.[12]
A Quaker community was established in Ifield in the mid-17th century, and by 1676 more than a quarter of the village's population were Nonconformist Christians, mostly Quakers. In that year the Ifield Friends Meeting House was built. It has been used continuously for worship since then, and is one of the oldest purpose-built Quaker meeting houses in existence.[17] The twin-gabled building is of Sussex stone and has a simple 18th-century interior.[18]

An early 19th-century house called Charlwood Park, listed at Grade II on 11 November 1966,[109] was originally within the boundary of the Crawley Borough Council area. The Charlwood and Horley Act 1974 moved parts of the village of Charlwood from West Sussex into Surrey,[110] out of the Borough of Crawley; and the house was subsequently demolished.[111] It is still shown as being in Crawley on the Images of England website, which therefore records the number of listed buildings as 95.[112]
